The YMCA in Chiang Ma, northern Thailand, has been exporting crafts to fair trade organisations since 1982, as well as selling locally. The Y works with more than 50 producer groups in northern, north-eastern and southern Thailand. Many of the producers are women, who earn supplementary income through craftwork.
It is also keen to encourage traditional skills, which are in danger of dying out and to promote environmental awareness. Fair trade provides a significant market for some of the producers linked to the YMCA e.g. ceramic and jewellery makers. Benefits include advance payments and design advice.
The long-term relationship with fair trade organisations is important and also between us and the producers. Nalinee Pussateva, Export Manager, Y Development.
